- Why not give the users a choice. Give them a hard drive and CDROM drive,
- then give them the option to buy which ever writable/backup device they
- want instead of forcing them to buy a floppy if they need it or not.
-
- I'm looking at it this way. People are bitching because AT wasn't able to
- put DSHD floppies on the Amigas they sell. If people would just stop and
- think about it, they would realize that the special DSHD floppies that
- are needed are more expensive than a 2X CDROM drive and a bit over half as
- much as a Zip drive. Also floppies are to small to distribute software on
- these days and lends themselves to be used in ways that games can't be
- installed on the hard drive. CDROMs are cheap enough for even small
- companies to distribute software on and they can hold up to 650MB. Add
- that to the fact that CDs aren't error prone like floppies. CDs are
- perfect for distribution of software. So every Amiga should have a CDROM
- drive. Also all Amigas need a hard drive to give the user active writable
- storage space.
-
- Not everyone needs a floppy drive and over time, even fewer people will
- need them. So, give them a choice, let them buy the type of backup
- storage they want or need. This choice could be in the form of either a
- basic HD+CD package and they could find the backup device they want or
- AT could do packs, sort of like the game packs, that include floppy
- drives or Zip drives. If you need a floppy drive, buy the floppy pack. If
- not, either buy the Zip or basic pack. Either way you go, you would end
- up with the best choice for you and the Amiga community isn't forced to
- have the floppy as the least common denominator for distribution of software.
- Also CDROMs can be hooked up to all older Amigas without any problems.
